Halloween night

I have the most beautiful Earth Fairy Princess of a daughter in the world.

Too bad she didn't like wearing her costume.

I would've loved to have taken her trick-or-treating this year, but she's just not ready. I look forward to the day she might be, though. I peered out our upstairs windows with interest as I watched little kids in costumes dash up and down the street, going from house to house, as the gusty wind blew red and yellow leaves all around. It was a perfect Halloween night for the trick-or-treaters. I thought, their parents are so lucky to watch them trick-or-treating with such a sense of purpose on this beautiful night!

We didn't give candy this year. Our neighborhood gets pretty hammered on Halloween by kids coming in from different neighborhoods. Last year, there were 250+ kids and by the end of the night, I was exhausted. Not to mention, some of them were teenagers (rolling eyes). Others that I found annoying were young mothers trick-or-treating on behalf of their infants ... I should've given them baby food. And then there was litter in the yard the next day.

Many of our neighbors keep the porch lights off, too, to try to ward off the assault. But I do like Halloween and I hope to start giving candy again next year.

And then I have this cute little bumblebee . . .

All he wanted to do was eat a maple leaf. But there's nothing cuter than babies in Halloween costumes.

GFCF
I went to our autism support group meeting last month, and I met a lady who was very disparaging about the gluten-free, casein-free diet. She asked me if Stella was on it, and when I said yes, she told me that she was sad for kids on the diet because they didn't get any of the "good stuff." She was very negative.

So I just had to show the world how Stella is not deprived of anything good. This is a double chocolate brownie with frosting and sprinkles. I make batches of GFCF goodies and freeze them so that Stella can take something yummy to school on special occasions like parties. Sometimes I send them when she is showing too much interest in the non-GFCF foods that her fellow students are eating. Either way, I don't think she's too deprived.

You'd never know this brownie was gluten- and dairy-free either.

They look so cute! I love their costumes.

I just read a book recommendation on another blog for Gluten Free Girl by Shauna Ahern. I hear it's all about embrancing the gluten free lifestyle, is very positive, and doesn't focus on all the stuff you can't have. It made me think of you and Stella, so even though you've probably heard of it already, I thought I'd pass it along juuuust in case you hadn't.

Happy belated Halloween!

Cute costumes!

I didn't hand out candy either. I thought that I wasn't going to be home, so I didn't buy any candy. (I went out later than I planned.)
I didn't have any treats for the few trick-or-treaters that came to my door. I felt so bah-humbugish. Next year.

The gluten-free, dairy-free foods are tricky to make taste good. I just tried my hand at it with a friend whose daughter had a lot of food allergies. It takes a big commitment to find recipes and foods that fit that diet, but it's worth it! Good for you for finding yummy things to make for Stella!!!

I'd like to take credit, but the brownies were a mix and the frosting is Pillsbury!

One time after swimming lessons, we stopped by the health food store and they were having a gluten free food fair. Stella got to taste different GF foods that day, and we picked out this brownie mix because the sample had her asking for more. There are a lot of companies making GF foods because of so many people being diagnosed with Celiacs Disease.

Sometimes I think making homemade GFCF baked goods is out of the question because you have to have tons of ingredients like xantham gum, fava bean flour, potato flour, rice flour. But the mixes are nice.

I am going to try a GFCF chocolate cream pie for Stella at Thanksgiving. Whole Foods sells GFCF pie crust. Not to go on about it ... and sometimes I'm not sure how much the diet is helping ... but it helped a lot initially so that's why we keep doing it.

Those kiddos sure do look cute in their costumes on halloween, we never have had any trick or treaters for halloween and now days parents do not take their kids out because of crime and abuse on that night alot of places in Topeka have sponsered activities for the kids such as our dillons store had trunk or treat and it's all supervised by adults but I think the kids enjoyed it by the way that cherry pie looks wonderful Love Grandma Susan

When I was out there, I was impressed by your devotion to giving Miss Stella the best diet you could in spite of all the extra work. So good for you! Won't be long until she'll be sneaking into those pies!
